Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Introductory remarks by the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations on behalf of the Member States of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization at the plenary meeting of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly under agenda item 123 (w) "Cooperation between the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization"

At the outset, I would like to welcome the recent Secretary-General's report on the cooperation between the United Nations and regional and other organizations, which provides us with an insight into the latest developments in this important area of the UN activities.

Today on behalf of the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization – the People's Republic of China, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan – I have the honor to introduce a draft resolution entitled "Cooperation between the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization". The draft is based on previous General Assembly Resolutions 64/183 of 18 December 2009, 65/124 of 13 December 2010 and 67/15 of 19 November 2012.

Over the last few years the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has become a cornerstone of regional security in all its dimensions. Its activities are aimed at promoting mutual trust, encouraging cooperation in economy, education, energy, environment, information security and other fields. Our member states considerably contribute to the maintenance of international peace and security.

The Organization promotes effective counter-terrorism cooperation, including through its Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure, fight against drug trafficking and other types of transnational crime. We are making a significant contribution to stabilization efforts in neighboring Afghanistan.

The draft before you is the outcome of informal consultations convened by the Russian Federation in its capacity as the current Chair of the Organization. We would like to thank all delegations that participated and worked constructively for the benefit of further strengthening the existing ties between the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation organization.
